Technological Advancement in Basketball
Hoops Before and Now:
This picture here shows the difference between now and before. At the right and kind of faraway you can see the regular basketball hoop that everyone knows about. But at the left the one much bigger looks like a basket. Those were wooden peach baskets that were usually hung at ten feet above the ground. Usually, the basketball players who mad a successful shot would have to get a ladder to retrieve the ball. So, basketball players quickly replaced the wooden baskets with metal rims attached to nets. Though the nets remained closed until 1906. That was when players decided to cut holes in them to allow the ball to pass through after a successful shot. The height of the basketball hoop has remained at 10 feet since the sport's invention. You can see a huge difference since now and then.
Basketball Shoes Before and Now:
This picture here shows a pair of basketball shoes. Converse dominated the basketball shoe market from 1921 until the 1960s with its Chuck Taylor shoes made of canvas and rubber soles. That was until leather appeared on the market. So then leather shoes became popular. The 1980s saw many technological advancements in basketball shoes when companies such as Nike, Reebok and Adidas released shoes with new air-sole technology. For example, Nike released its Air Force 1 basketball shoe. Which had air sole technology that was developed by Bruce Kilgore in 1983. Later on companies began designing custom shoe lines for NBA players.
Basketball shoes should have good traction. Good traction means that the coefficient of friction between the shoe and the floor must be high. Also, a player uses static friction when planting their foot. This static friction allows a player to stop and turn without sliding across the floor because the static friction
is greater than the sliding friction
